To understand why Trekkies like myself love Star Trek Beyond, well. The previous two films, it felt like they were made by someone with only a passing knowledge of Star Trek. (I’m looking at you, Jar Jar Abrams.) This movie felt like it was made by someone who was a hardcore Trekkie who knew their shit.
That Simon Pegg admits to using Memory Alpha is fucking proof. I’ve loved you since Hot Fuzz, but holy shit, I’m so sorry if anyone hurt you because of that atrocious first trailer. Also, props to (co-writer) Doug Jung for being Ben Sulu, because they literally couldn’t find another asian actor who would take the role of being Hikaru Sulu’s husband. It’s a bit role, but y’all passed up the roll of a lifetime.
(Fun fact: John Cho (Sulu) insisted on his husband be asian, because there isn’t any representation of asian/asian homosexuality in media. (Apparently, there’s shame with it?) THAT is how to be an ally.)
