On Rigs. in The Napkin.

Since I’ve built my last two computers, I feel rather “oh, it’s easy. Anybody can do it. I’m nothing special.” You don’t need to know the specifics of how hardware works to assemble a new rig. Moreover, motherboards are clearly labeled and most plugs will only fit into one place on a motherboard. The 20-in connector from your motherboard only goes one place. Your RAM will only fit one way. Connectors from your drives only go in one place. Your CPU will only fit one way. You only need to buy a case, motherboard, cpu/heatsink, ram, video card, storage drives, optical drive(s), power supply, and an OS. Seems simple to me.

But to the completely uninitiated, if I were to create a tutorial, it would probably make most just walk away quietly. “Set your paging file on your SSD equal to your RAM” feels like direct language to me.

As an aside, I built Kelly Quark over five years ago. I’ve never had to wipe my boot drive to reinstall WIndows (7), and given my decrease in gaming, I may not upgrade until past 2020.

Ha ha. : )

At first 2020 sounded ridiculous to me, until I realized that's less than four years from now. I have a similar setup regarding my computer and Windows 7, though I had bought a middle-of-the-road system back in 2011, so even though I've since upgraded to an SSD, increased my RAM, and bought a bigger, better videocard, my CPU is showing its age. And yet, for my system (which is AMD), there aren't really many viable upgrades worth the money, unless I replace my motherboard, at which point I'm more or less making a new computer.

Only time I stress my quad-core is if I'm triple-boxing Everquest2. Even then, the fourth core tends to have some wiggle room. I COULD upgrade my video card, but why bother? I maxed out my board with 16 gigs of RAM and haven't seen it go beyond 8 gigs of usage. Oops.

(Never forget when I had to upgrade from 4 megs to 8 because Sim City 2000 would crash. Not letting that happen again.)

(Also, woo AMD.)

This is a good time to build a good PC and hold onto it awhile.
