The friend that first forced me to watch Star Wars (in my twenties) totally acknowledged how ridiculous and campy it is, that it was part of its charm. I respected him for that. As a Trekkie, we had a truce. I’d totally acknowledge Star Trek’s flaws and he’d acknowledge Star Wars’ flaws. So I’m a little confused by people who think it’s some cinematic masterpiece. Well-shot, absolutely. Entertaining at times. But frankly, I just don’t like any of the characters.

You got the chosen one, who is a whiny idiot. The wizard who refused to train the chosen one, then killed himself instead of training him personally. A giant hairy thing which makes annoying high-pitched noises. A misogynist asshole. An annoying gay robot. The deus ex machina robot. A puppet in a swamp. A weirdo in a black robe. Another old weirdo who probably has ED. Oh, and the plot is for good to destroy evil.

The prequels had more plot holes than swiss cheese and some even stranger characters, but at least they entertained me more. And had Ewan.

Ewan makes everything better. The fandom can be intense at times. I like the story of Star Wars but some people treat the original trilogy like it's the holy grail. Oh, and when I say original, I mean not the remastered blah blah blah that apparently doesn't count. lol

I'm trying to get into Star Trek. I like the new movies and Netflix has all of the original seasons. I like how in the beginning you can tell that they weren't sure how Spock was going to look. The makeup choices are hilarious.

Never seen Ewan in a bad role. He did the best he could for all the green-screening they subjected him to. Star Wars is like Harry Potter for me. Entertaining, but not entirely my fandom.

Star Trek's hard to get into because there's just SO MUCH of it. I thought recently how I'd suggest testing the waters.

I think it's generally a bad idea to force people into one's fandoms, even in a friendly way. If you don't come to it naturally, there's not much point, in my opinion. (I had people trying to get me to watch Doctor Who for DECADES [even back when it was a low-rent 70's/80's show.]) It wasn't until I came to it of my own accord (and from a "see what all the fuss is about" standpoint, which also rarely goes well), that I became a fan. (Though that has since come full circle to where I'm not much of a fan any more.) As for Star Trek, I started out with The Next Generation, and gradually started into the original series. I've not really given DS9, Voyager, or Enterprise a shot. And I've hated (or at least been a tad bored by) most of the movies.

Doctor Who is SO FREAKING WEIRD. It certainly wasn't the first episode of the reboot which drew me in. It was that my ex had it on in the background and I found myself distracted while playing Everquest2. So we started over with the ninth doctor and took it from there. I've tried watching the "classic" who, but maybe I shouldn't have started with the black and white. Talk about a cure for insomnia.

People are flabbergasted when I mention that I typically find Chewie annoying. Force Awakens was the first time where it felt like he was ACTUALLY emoting, rather than just making random grunts.

I grew up with Star Wars. Even though I grew up loving it, as a grown-up, I can totally see it's flaws. The films just aren't that great. I get that there had never been this big, sprawling, cinematic, dramatic, sci-fi/adventure/action kind of film before, so that's why people kind of glommed onto it, but yeah... I'm much more of a Trekkie, even though I didn't seriously watch TOS until I was an adult.
