Something interesting I’m learning from D&D is the difference between optimizing a character out-of-game and optimizing a character in-character. Like, a character that has found use in certain spells would want similar stronger spells later, would want to develop skills that help with what they’ve experienced, would want to be able to do the things the group they’re in would need. The kind of non-meta-gaming optimization that anyone would do in real life. It’s interesting to learn how that works and how it doesn’t.
