This is an unpopular opinion, but the electoral college is a safeguard and ideally would allow for a candidate that doesn’t have a plurality achieve victory. If delegates were proportional like it is in the primaries, it would encourage a more diverse field. Imagine candidate A gets 33% of delegates, candidate B gets 30% of delegates, and candidate C gets 20% of delegates. Why should candidate C’s supporters not matter? On the second ballot, they could throw their lot in with Candidate B, and have a clear majority.
The only other option is if we had a live national voting like a game show, where you have to play along and recast your votes until there is a majority winner. But that’ll never happen. That’s why we elect delegates to represent us.
