The right’s notion that “illegal immigrants” will take jobs away from citizens seems like a red herring. Some corporate CEO isn’t at all threatened by someone whose first language isn’t English. I like the sentiment that if you lose your job to an “illegal immigrant”, either you’re not good at your job or they’re more qualified. That immigrants might be paid less only benefits those writing the checks.
Immigration doesn’t threaten corporate America. Imagine having an educated population where being born into wealth doesn’t guarantee a high-paying job, where ordinary citizens equally have opportunity to improve their socioeconomic status. Immigration doesn’t scare the rich, education does. This emphasis on immigration is a ruse to turn the middle and lower class against each other.
