On Immigration. in The Napkin.

The right’s notion that “illegal immigrants” will take jobs away from citizens seems like a red herring. Some corporate CEO isn’t at all threatened by someone whose first language isn’t English. I like the sentiment that if you lose your job to an “illegal immigrant”, either you’re not good at your job or they’re more qualified. That immigrants might be paid less only benefits those writing the checks.

Immigration doesn’t threaten corporate America. Imagine having an educated population where being born into wealth doesn’t guarantee a high-paying job, where ordinary citizens equally have opportunity to improve their socioeconomic status. Immigration doesn’t scare the rich, education does. This emphasis on immigration is a ruse to turn the middle and lower class against each other.

my company is sponsoring one of our guys (from mexico) he has been here since the early 90's. anyway I am responsible for his paperwork and dealing with the lawyer. one of the things I had to do was run an ad in the newspaper (old school style) asking for American citizens if they want this guys job, then interview these people to see if they have the experience. IF they do, we are to hire this guy over the guy who has worked here for 15 years. dudes job is irrigation specialist/plumber. I got 4 resumes. I called all 4 guys, one was going back to school, another one didn't want the commute, and other random reasons. we also have to prove that we can pay this guy 47K a year (which he makes over that-dude works like 55 hours a week). I didn't think it was fair for us to get rid of our guy who we know will come to work and work his butt off for this company. just because he is from mexico. and actually he just got the approval to be a citizen last week! this has been a long process. all the guy wants is to buy a house and get a drivers license.

Really goes for anybody, but if you pay taxes, you should be entitled to all government services.

I have a problem with illegal immigration, keyword 'illegal'. Only because it's entirely unfair to the people who go through the process to come here legally. I get that it's a lot of paperwork, time and money but do the right thing. In order for my boyfriend to come to the states we have to go through legal BS red tape like everyone else. I get that a lot of people are all 'they collect government benefits' but I know more white people, born and raised in the U.S who are collecting benefits and have barely put a dime back into the system. At least someone here illegally (usually) will hold down a job. That can't even be said for a lot of citizens.
