I’ve always enjoyed the irony that Cat Stevens’ song “Wild World” might be the least wild song of all time.

Shedding your sense of expectation, maybe even entitlement, is difficult enough being human, overwhelmingly hard in this particular culture. We’re told things are all supposed to fold out in a certain way and when they don’t, we feel like failures. But the lies failed, not us.

This is, of course, one of the great flaws in humanity’s wiring: if we can’t have perfect, we choose to burn it all down instead of compromising for pretty good.

The great paradox of this life is that you can’t force things but you can’t just stand around and wait for them to come to you. You have to find some impossible balance between the two that I’ve no idea how to understand.
