At a certain point, if we ever get to the other side of this, it will need to be The Time Of The Do-Overs. To grant them to other people, sure, but for God’s sake, to ourselves. We will need to grant a lot of second chances to ourselves.

The pictures from the past where everyone is smoking, without the context of knowing what they’re doing, they look like people walking around with the fires of hell emanating from their throats without even realizing it is A Thing.

The first place I’m going after lockdown ends is… nowhere special… because if we all rush out to crap immediately, it’s gonna undo everything we’ve been working for and kill millions. Jeez. C’mon now.

The intelligent fall for cults even easier than the less-gifted because when they really want something to be true, if they build their identity around it, they have the capacity to keep talking themselves into it, no matter how disproven or impossible the thing is.

If I could grant myself the latitude, the forgiveness and the second chances I try to give to others, there’s no telling who I could be. As it is, I just gotta bumble and stumble and try to not feel like too too much of a screw-up.

Our whole disaster response structure is built around one-and-done events, is half the problem. Hurricane sweeps through in a weekend, terrorist attack happens in a twinkling, old Y2K fantasies, earthquake, etc. We stupidly didn’t factor for a simmering tragedy like this.
