  1. House be burning down, the far right and far left be arguing over the definition of fire while the rest run for water.

  2. A man blinded to reality by hateful greed and a man blinded to reality by ideological stridency. Certainly the second is a better man in theory but in practice, follow either off a cliff and you are equally dead.

  3. This is not a time to rename the virus to be more racist anymore than it is time for a smug hectoring lecture about economic theory. People are dying, for Chrissakes be humane or, at least, be quiet for once.

  4. During a distant war, during the rise of a dictator, during the quickening beats of a coming plague, we still mostly just get up and go to work, we still cook dinner, kiss our loves goodnight and fall into a restless sleep to rinse and repeat.

  5. In PICARD, Riker looks like the oldest actor at the Ren Faire, forced to be the blacksmith so that he is maximum distance from the women selling the turkey legs.

  6. Nearly goddamned anything becomes normal to us, if we survive it long enough, it is humanity’s most maddening curse and the source of our endurance, all at once.

  7. On the positive tip, I just googled “Garf Brooks” and discovered dozens upon dozens of pictures of Garfield as a lame pop-country crooner so at least the internet didn’t disappoint me for one.

  8. When a politician promises a change that Congress or the Supreme Court would never allow, it means they either don’t know how the presidency works or that they want to be a dictator. It was true with Trump, with Nixon, with anyone.
