itself afraid in poetry

a lack of fear just proves
you’re some damned fool or
that you are dead inside
we waltz with our fears
in each choice, in every
second that we’re alive

the key to overcoming this
is not in being unafraid
is rather about being scared
out of your whole fucking mind
but still doing things anyway

so when you avoid disaster
at least at first do not
accuse fret scream or wail
at least at first celebrate
you dodged the brunt of it
this time disaster failed
and for that one moment
that’s the only thing
that really matters
