South east Spain in the winter is great when the sun is out - and it was for all the two weeks we were there - a great time to walk and just relax - but things started to come apart a bit last Wednesday.
There was a fire in the terminal at Alicante Airport - for some reason the roof was on fire - and although it was quickly under control too nearly a day to put out because of the insulation material on fire and the problems of accessing it.
You can imagine the chaos as the airport was evacuated - flights diverted and other cancelled.
The problem is getting any real information - since we were due to fly out on Saturday.
The airport reopened on Thursday afternoon and it was some relief to know our flight was OK - and all the possibilities of being stuck disappeared.
The damage to the airport has meant half the gates are inaccessible - which pits presure on all the others - thank goodness this was not the summer since Alicante is the fifth busiest airport in Spain.
We were only half an hour late leaving - and got back to the UK on time - much relieved.
Even more so since we knew there was going to be a major storm on Sunday night into Monday - and apparently is came - hitting the east coast of Spain on the Med - with major snowfall inland - and major wind and rain. They closed the airport again on Monday becasue of the dangerous weather - and that will last 24 hours - and an e mail from our neighbour in the apartments has described the weather as horrendous - with the wind taking away newly erected fencing - and flooded roads. It might be cold here - but it is great to be home.
