What motivates you?

Dreams.

Growing up on the rez (poorest of the poorest of the poor) we were often told we wouldn’t do much with our lives. I remember being a junior in high school and having a “teacher” ask us what we wanted to do with our lives. Some people said they wanted to take over their relatives’ positions in the tribe.

When I was little, my Dad was a security guard at a college. He would bring back National Geographic magazines given to him instead of going into the trash.

I remember looking at those pictures and I wanted to be the one taking those pictures.

So when it was my turn to answer, I told them that I wanted to travel and was told, “you have to be realistic with your life goals. You already have three strikes against you being a minority, a woman, and coming from a reservation.”

I do what I want. I want to travel? I did. And now that I have a job, I can save and do it again. I want to go to a Red Wings game? I will buy my ticket next payday when my check is amazeballs. My friend Simps is gonna help me find a good app to go through for my ticket because StubHub is more expensive than Ticketmaster.

I will have my dreams and I will achieve them.

That is my motivation.
