upon an old warehouse in poetry

tear it down
blow it up
give it away
sentimentality is nice
but we can drown as rocks in the water
by clinging too tightly to yesterday

tomorrow is coming
and we can either tokens of the past
wasting our energy in hanging on
or turn our eyes to the rising sun
and muster our strength
in the new dawn's service instead

today is here
and to survive tomorrow
you might have to be gone
into the ether of time
or off to Timbuktu
and there's nothing wrong with memory
and there's certainly nothing wrong with love
but if we want to walk in the new
there are some things we must let go of
when push comes to shove

your arms can only hold so much
and there are new things to embrace today
there are things that must be torn down
blown up
given away
and it's okay
we're gonna live in the morrow
there are no homes
in yesterday
