crazy in poetry

those great “crazy geniuses” did their best
most valued and well-remembered work during
extended periods of lucidity and/or recovery
the works of “madness” were generally crap
either hidden by their estates or burned
by the artists in some manic frenzy
don’t fetishize mental illness
that’s not how illness works
that’s not how art works
that’s not how any
of this works
