Halloumi in Diary

I've had to separate my zebra finches. The male has been chasing and bullying the female. I separated them for a few days a few weeks ago and, when I put them back together, they seemed pleased to see each other for a while. But now he's bullying her again, including all through the night so she's exhausted. He's also pulled out her tail. Seriously, she has no tail feathers left and looks even smaller than usual. So I've had to put them in separate cages again. I'm hoping it's just because he's randy or something and will be ok after a couple of weeks; I can't keep them in separate cages for the rest of their lives.

Last night's grocery shop included things that I don't normally buy, such as houmous, figs, sun dried tomatoes, pitta bread, halloumi and spiced apple juice. (No, Prosebox, I'm not American and don't want to change my spelling of houmous. Nor do I want to change my spelling of Prosebox...or halloumi...)

Anyone would think I was a hippy or something with that shopping list ;o) Although I've just found out that halloumi is set with rennet, which is really bad because, when we had a food van at work for Christmas, their vegetarian option was halloumi...

Jay was unpacking my shopping pulling faces and making "Yuck" noises. Hey, just because none of my shopping is made from dead animals, doesn't mean it's yucky!

Oh and spiced apple juice is my new favourite thing; it tastes just like mulled cider, but without the alcohol so I can drink it on a school night. It's very very nommy.

My boss actually managed to find time to talk to me yesterday, for all of 20 minutes. First time I've seen her for months. I told her how I was struggling since Amy started doing more HR work, especially if she's out all day doing job interviews, leaving me in the office on my own with no prior warning. She nodded and made "Hmm hmm" noises but I don't see anything coming of it.

Anyway, I'll be out of here in a few months, fingers crossed ;o)

I miss apple juice, I gave it up when I started calorie counting cos it had too many - boo! I was considering giving up meat for Lent but I don't think I'd eat anything!! Not that I particularly eat a lot of meat, I often find the veggie option when I go out is quite appealing, unless it's fish related!

Well I knew apple juice had a lot of natural sugars, but I didn't realise it was high in calories.

Fish shouldn't be offered as a vegetarian option really as fish are animals. Sadly the veggie options hardly ever appeal to me when eating out as they usually contain peppers and / or onions which are the only vegetables I can't stand :o(

I don't think I've ever had halloumi...

I looovve halloumi, but it has to be cooked just right to avoid it being squeeky!! I didn't know it wasn't veggie though, that's bad.

(I get a bit irked when people say fish is a veggie option.. My boss is a "vegetarian" who eats fish and occasionally a bacon butty, whaaat).

Oh it was really squeaky when I ate it, how do you avoid that? I did a bit of research and you can get vegetarian halloumi, it isn't all set with rennet. The one I bought turned out to be veggie once I looked at the packaging. Serves me right for getting my 'facts' from Wikipedia!

Me too! I have no idea why people think that fish don't count as animals. People who eat seafood but no other meat are called pescetarians, if you eat any animal products you can't call yourself a vegetarian.

I've never really got the hang of the non-squeaky halloumi, but I know i've had it non-squeaky when I've had it in restaurants or at this certain stall at glastonbury festival haha. I think it's down to the length of time it's grilled..
