Do you believe in God? in Journal

A woman that I met for the second time in my life asked me yesterday.
The question caught be off guard- not because it isn’t a good question, or because the answer wouldn’t have deep meaning or significance. But because I found it incredibly rude, and just a little bit personally insulting.
I might relate it to your neighbor that just moved in next door. You take them some delicious baked good in welcome, and the next time they see you, with niceties past, “Do you believe in personal hygiene?”
Hmmmm.
Why do you want to know? Do I stink? Is my house dirty? Are you worried I’m going to trash the neighborhood?
She rushed on (I guess she’s a ‘talker’) with some apologetic platitudes. ‘I never judge anyone, I take people where they are, I accept you exactly as you are’.
Uh-huh.
I may be a tad bit cynical because I grew up with sociopaths hanging around, but this lady was outlandishly hypocritical. I’m not even sure if she realized it. She seemed pretty earnest. I let her go on in her apologetics for a whole minute. haha. Sometimes I just really enjoy it when people step in their own shit.
After which I finally answered with a platitude of my own (since she was so willing to give it, why not take it?). “That’s an interesting question,” I began, “But, you know everyone has a god. And it’s not usually the God they profess in.”
“Oh, yes, ah, of course you’re right..” deeply uncomfortable now. Finally got it.

Social banter has always annoyed me to the core. It’s almost like a pack of dogs jeering back and forth to see who comes out on top. Who is quick enough, smart enough, funny enough, whatever enough, to come out on top, in the middle, on the bottom? Which is sometimes funny, if done intelligently and with humor, but most of the time it’s just sad and horrific to watch, because people are too dumb to realize its a game; they take it seriously.
It’s insufferable.
My response to any situation in which this seems to be happening is most often silence, and a dead-pan stare. I do no care to engage in any such interaction. And continued bantering on anyone’s part receives a less and less enthusiastic glare from moi.
I’m happy to have a real conversation that discusses content. But this fakery… this posturing… this façade of emotional muck… it makes me want to vomit.
