Wow!
So… today I was in demand.
After a sentencing hearing, I had a thirty minute meeting about Child Rape because… holy shit have those numbers skyrocketed for us around here!
During that meeting, I received two phone calls. (1) I’m from New York and you fuckin’ Iowa Hillbillies gave me a ticket for doing 89. How are you going to fix this? (2) Hi, my boyfriend beat me up but it is okay because we do drugs together so it isn’t like he meant it… can you lift the no contact order?
But before I could return those calls… more phone calls. For two hours straight! Everything from “Can you make it so that my daughter doesn’t need insurance in this state?” (Answer: THAT is not within my power.) to DHS calling me about a parent hitting their child to attorneys calling me about plea deals and scheduling… just… off.the.hook. phone calls.
Obviously, I far prefer talking to the attorneys. People who call asking me things like, “How do I get my horses back if somebody took ‘em?” and “But why do I need to follow the law?”… those people shouldn’t have my number. Those people shouldn’t have direct access to me. That isn’t me being “holier than thou” nor is it me being “elitist.” That is me saying… I work for the tax payer in order to protect Children, Roads, and victims of Violence or Sexual Assault. Every single one of you that believes you should somehow be considered an exception to the law… or above reproach… or absolved from consequences? Shut up. Grow up. And embrace the fact that in a perfect world… we’d all be accountable for our decisions. The fact that some people aren’t doesn’t mean YOU shouldn’t be… it means that they SHOULD be.
