Time in my garden at last in The View from the Terrace

After all of the storms and the rain it has been lovely to enjoy 2 fine sunny days. At last I have been able to spend some hours in the garden. I planted the last of the pansies in tubs, did a general tidy up of the flower beds and made a start on pruning the roses.
When I am working on the roses I always think of my father. He loved roses but, until I was 11, we never had a garden as we kept a pub. When Dad took early retirement he was able to indulge his love of them and It was he who taught me how to care for them. He died when I was 15 and since then I have always been the one to look after the roses, first in my mother’s garden and then, after I married, in my own.
Dad died in early December and not long afterwards my mother saw a robin in the garden. Robins had been Dad’s favouite bird and she used to say that he had come to visit whenever we saw one. Today, just as I started the pruning a robin came and perched on a nearby bush and started to sing and I felt as though Dad was with me again.
Earlier 3 wild geese landed in our outside Christmas tree. They were making a heck of a noise, then they rose and flew in perfect formation across the road to the grove of black poplar trees over there. I have never seen wild geese in our garden before, sometimes they fly over but today they decided to pop in for a visit.
It feels as though spring isn’t that far away. The snowdrops are out and the daffodils are almost in bud. It feel’s so good to get a change from the awful storms that have been going on for weeks and weeks.
