turning corners in poetry

the grocery store your parents took
you to as a little kid no longer exists
all the money in the world could not
bring you back there even for a second
it irrevocably no longer exists here
I had a dream last night that took place
in a corner store-deli I loved as a child
but I woke to realize that not only does
Carney’s Corners no longer exist
the pizzeria that moved in after
is closed as well now too
and I couldn’t have the ice cream bar
chocolate delight I dreamt of anyway
I have to watch my blood sugar now
because I am older now
and really considering that
I couldn’t have had the pizza either
had the second place still been there
starches fracture into sugars over time
like stores turn into other stores
like other stores turn into nothing
like just people get older too
