As of this month, I've been working at this hospital now for 5 years. Started as the biller for the Surgery Dept before getting promoted to an accountant in the finance dept. I've gone through 4 supervisors up in Surgery, and had two Comptrollers prior to this current Comptroller who took over last month
As of this month, for the first time in my 5 years of employment here (my first real job after college), I'm ready to leave. I'm 100% ready to walk out of that door. The only thing stopping me is the need to keep the benefits at the moment. The health insurance and all that jazz since we have a newborn baby. My wife restarts her job on Monday, so it'll take about 3 months for her benefits to kick in. At that point, I'm gone! No question, no promotion or raise could change my mind
I can't stand the new Comptroller. After all the bosses I mentioned, I finally ran into a co-worker I can't get along with. I'm a loyal guy, I didn't fit into America's work philosophy of "every man for himself" (that includes every business for itself) where people come and go for money and businesses fire and hire for saving money. In business school I was taught that in Europe workers are loyal to their companies and vice versa. I considered moving there...
Anyways, so yeah it takes a special kind of jerk to get me riled up to want to leave. I've stuck it out here through thick and thin, more so than a lot of people (obviously, if you count that number of bosses I've had in 5 years, that's a lot of turnover)
I don't want to mention specifics on why he's a grade-A jerk, but I'll sum it up with this. He's an old, fat guy with no wife or kids. He's pretty cold-hearted, and his life is defined by his career. I'm young (or 'younger', 30 really isn't young) and married with a newborn. I don't give a crap about a 'job' other than for monetary gain, I'm defined by the family I have at home. So we don't get along
He tries to make me stay late to get extra stuff done. I know we're short staffed here, but I also know all the deadlines and routines. There's no reason for me to stay late if there's nothing due. Especially when those winter storms came in, he wanted me to drive in 60 miles of ice roads to work, even though nothing was due for two weeks. We're freaking accountants! We don't save lives, our work is not necessary on a daily basis.
Also some of this crap he wants me to stay extra for, he could do his damn self. This extra work is because we don't have a Senior Accountant, just the Comptroller and me. I'm a staff accountant. I don't get paid to stay extra for this extra work. So if I'm not a Comptroller, Comptroller Assistant, or Senior Accountant, I shouldn't be doing this crap anyways
moral of the story: Since I'm ready to walk out, I'm so unmotivated to even come to work. I've resorted to changing my phone's alarm ringtone to "Everything is Awesome!". The Lego Movie rules! :P
Have a Nice Day!
