captain oh my captain in poetry

we were hopelessly out-numbered
only so long we could stand
but I thought we were gonna
go down in this ship together
I thought that was the plan

you'd have a better chance without me
I'm sure that's what you were thinking
sometimes wonder how that worked out for you
sometimes wonder how I didn't end up drinking
instead wrote the book on sinking

didn't figure we'd have children
figured we'd have fifteen cats
never figured I be alone down here
taking on bilge water
with the less forward-thinking rats

we could'a burnt in glory years ago
at least that wouldn't have been cold
instead of living on alone
ignoring offers of assistance on the phone
sitting getting old

killing time instead
beneath the waterline
waiting for the
secrets of the deep
drowning in the company
of the promises
I tried to keep
