I never thought that I’d be writing something like this. The blessings of darkness? I must be losing my mind. How come darkness be full of them? Isn’t it supposed to be full of deadly, nasty things? If you’d like to look at it differently, shouldn’t it be empty?

Actually, darkness is not always evil. For example: it helps you to hide yourself better from enemies who boldly stand in the spotlight – pretending they are always flawless and all that jazz. Of course, you can’t hide forever. There comes a point when you have to step into the light too, facing them head on. Fight for your last stand.

Darkness teaches you to choose your friends wisely. A sweet, reassuring voice is not good enough. You also need to watch out what they really do.

As usual, some are plain users and others are temporary, fairweather friends. Either way, try not to take them both too personally. Users will always be gone soon and – if they ever come back, you know what to do. Let them prove their words if they swear they have changed or kick them out again for good.

The other type only have limited energy. You can’t force them to do more than their actual capability and willingness.

However, don’t get discouraged easily by their existence. The fact is, there are still people out there who genuinely care. You should never push them away or shut them out. You should be grateful that they’re around. Acting tough like you don’t need anyone doesn’t make you a better, stronger person.

Sometimes, you need them more than you’d ever like to admit – even to yourself. Sometimes pride does get in the way. It gives you nothing but emptiness.

Once in a while, it’s okay to let them in. Let them take care of you for a moment, at least until you’re strong enough to carry on again.

However, beware of this subtle trap called ‘self-pity’. Surely, it’s nice to be pampered. It’s good to have someone – or some people – take care of you. I’m not going to lie; that state is a comfort zone. I even enjoy that too.

Still, you know you can’t stay that way. There comes a point where you need to go back making it on your own. These supposedly nice people can get tired too. They’re also human, just like you.

Darkness also teaches you that yes, trust is frail and life is sometimes unfair. You don’t know everything and it’s okay. You can’t see everything, because you’re not meant to. Nobody is.

Last but not least, darkness also teaches you to find or create light on your own. Don’t just stand there moping around. Do something, anything. Stop cursing. Quit feeling sorry for yourself.

Start walking. No need to run, because you’ll still risk bumping into things in the dark anyway. (Learn to accept and) enjoy the process. In darkness, you must fight. With or without anyone, you must find your way back into the light.
