perennials in poetry

we are… perennials
we may get pushed down by
the cruelty of a long winter
but we will rise back up again
when we cycle on around to May
rise through the melting snow
that’s who we are
that’s what we do

through wars and social change
we rise
through depression and invention
we do rise
despite the crushing power of
seven months on frozen tundra
countless Lake Effect blizzards
we will rise again
be stronger and renewed
the perennials that we are

yes, there will always be moments
when we’re pushed down deep inside
but when the warmer days return
we rise
we rise
we rise
