The Sophie Scaife Series Book 5: The Baby
Cheese & Rice! I thought this genre (romance/erotica) was supposed to be fluff. Stuff you read to make you feel all warm & fuzzy or horny. This book is not fluff. It is depressing.
SPOILERS AHEAD
If you read the synopsis of books before you read them, you kind of knew that Emma and Michael were not going to be characters for very long. So Abigail Barnette decided to kill them off on the night of the gala for the Elwood Rape Crisis Center. Yep. In the last book she killed off Neil’s mom. Now she killed off his daughter and son-in-law and made Neil & Sophie her legal guardians.
Then…after a few chapters of crying people and a baby who can’t figure out where her parents are, Neil decides he is going to be done with life and there is a suicide attempt and then a long stay in an exclusive rehab center.
I read a response from the author on this book. Paraphrasing: She thought it would be funny? to drop Sophie into the mother role by having an oops baby. But after researching men who are recovering from leukemia and the possibility of their sperm not being fried by chemo, decided that she didn’t want to offend that population. Not sure if there is a statistic on that population reading her books, but…
Apparently the next best thing is to kill off the only people who have a baby and leave that child to the grandfather and his trophy-wife.
Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t think I would be crafting a response for the title of this book using the word funny, when you kill off two characters, throw a main character into a suicide attempt, especially in a “fluff” book.
Elsewhere, Sophie continues to be a selfish bitch throughout the book. Most of the supporting characters have gotten on three of my last nerves as well.
Only one more to go!
