being there in poetry

evolution is just the aggregation of
mistakes that turn out to be beneficial
until so many of them pile up at once and
you have something new despite yourself
make all of the mistakes, all of them
sort out what accidentally worked
at the end of that long day
craft your passing flukes
into something glorious
evolve
shed your gills to walk on land
shed your scales to fly
it will never happen quickly
it will rarely be beautiful from the start
but it can happen
embrace the little errors that turn out
to inform you after all
not only can you change
but it’s the only way you can better deal
with how weird and difficult life can be
evolve
evolve then keep evolving still
it’s all we’ve got to do
it’s all we get to do
it’s all we’ve got
