I couldn’t watch. I felt myself grabbing desperately at the folds of my dress, more sure with every silent second that it would be bad news again.

“I want to show you something. There’s the heart beating right there.”

David leapt up, with unbelievable speed, from his chair at the foot of the table and laid his hands on mine.

“Oh my God, oh my God. I can’t really tell but I believe you.”

We got a picture. A due date. An inkling of hope.
