these trying times in poetry

lullabies and alibis
we’re all just trying
to get sleep at night
alibis and lullabies
can’t we just try to
rest tired eyes
drop our defenses
lower the disguise

short hellos and long goodbyes
shorter lives and longer cries
we’re mostly gone before we’re wise
we’re mostly gone before we rise
before all cut down to size
it’s lullabies and alibis
we may not find comfort or peace
we may not find solace in the least
but we have to at least try
to get to sleep at night
in these trying times
