tether in poetry

you will be tethered to the past
whether you’re on board with it or not
you do have a choice, though
between the past being a weight upon chains
dragging you down into useless despair
or the past as a balloon on a gossamer thread
pulling you up into kindness and glory
what you hang onto
also gets to hang onto you
you can’t change the past
but you can change how the past
will influence your future
that’s the call you get to make
I’m not saying it will easy
I’m not saying it will even always work
but that’s the one choice you get to make
between dragging down
and moving forward and
may you move forward
