humane nature in poetry

hatred and greed are not
wired into the human condition
it just seems like that because
we recursively create that system

when I was a little boy
I thought the malls were always just there
would always just be there
but my parents remembered when the main streets
were torn up to make way for the malls
now as a man, I watch the shopping centres fall
that’s how greed and hatred are too
they’re not eternal or intrinsic
we can endeavour to start new
just by breaking the cycle

we got this far by helping each other
we got this far through communal action
we got this far by being in this together
mutual aid got us out of the caves and the trees
it’s just the last few thousand years
marked by the fluke of hate and greed
now look at all the trouble
every year just watch it double
but at any moment, we can stop and just care
just because something was
doesn’t mean that it’s always been there
and we can change it
