descending into Newark airport
past refineries and roundabouts
past shipping docks and used car lots
we dip our wings through turbulence
off toward Manhattan Island
toward New York City
orange sun-flares gleam off
buildings everyone has heard of
and I think to myself
“New York,
you great big screaming bitch,
you great big beautiful bitch,
you gigantic heaving steaming wound bleeding out pure beauty
I want you back”
I want you back you manic psychotic
the thrum of the trains
the bleeding true of
twenty-four-hour egg-sandwich bodegas
the trust fund hipsters dressed up like the homeless
the homeless dressed like fourth-world-war survivors
I whisper “I want you back”
as we dip our wings through the breaking of the day
New York doesn’t answer
she doesn’t have to
everybody wants her and
the people who say that they hate her
want her twice as much as even I do
