Today was a busy day!
Suppression motion… Prosecutor caved. Another case dismissed.
Asylum Case… I really want to help this kid. He 100% deserves asylum. But I know how fucked up our current government is and I don’t want to fuck up his petition. So, while I have been able to help translate his personal statement and write the narrative for the letter… I have… a LOT… a LOT… of research to do to try to make sure I write this thing well. Which immediately becomes a tug of war between… what I can do, what I can’t do, how much time it takes to do, Chinese Boss’ deadlines, and all of that. So… fingers crossed, I suppose.
Kind of thing gives me an ulcer. The few cases where I actually care. Where the kid from China isn’t trying to buy his way into the country and isn’t actively trying to buy the country… just a kid who was tortured and wants to be protected.
AND the really fucked up horrendous thing? An abusive asshole that wants to come to this country to start a business, but hires Chinese Nationals instead of Americans, and sends all the profits back to China… he has a better shot at getting in. Because while his Corporate Tax prices will be nothing… the US still wants that business in this country to reap a few dollars from it via shipping costs and other elements. Even though the majority of the benefits of the business go back to China or Chinese citizens.
Meanwhile you have people in this country that will literally be killed if you send them back… and we’re treating them like Criminals. BY THE WAY… this asylum case? NOT an undocumented immigrant. The kid is legally here as a Student. He has broken no laws and has played by all of the rules to come into this country legally. And it is still going to be tough to convince our Federal Government that… maybe, just possibly… sending an Iowa Educated 22 year old kid back to China where he will be tortured to force his family to comply with local official demands… maybe we shouldn’t be the country that does that.
Oh, and funny thing…if you can call it funny. Chinese boss decided that Muse and Chinese Assistant should be punished as well (for ticky tacky bullshit administrative things) and took $100 out of their bonuses. Which put Chinese Assistant at just the wrong mood for when a Chinese Client called to yell at him. I could hear his Chinese Language Yelling Back from my office down the hall. SO Chinese Boss, Chinese Assistant, and Muse had an impromptu hour long meeting behind closed doors. Then, just as I was getting ready to leave… Chinese Boss and Muse are having a further behind closed doors meeting.
Ah… the joys of living on the corner of Crazy Chinese Lady Avenue and Stress Filled Work Area Lane… home of “Chinese Cultural Bullshit Discount Warehouse Store” and “Toxic Work Environment Surplus Supply Chain”
