2nd Jury Trial as defense. Same defendant and same county as first one. This time, like next time, his actions could have gotten him SHOT but for the fact that these officers don’t immediately fire a kill shot when they feel threatened. I hate how being Defense makes me loathe my favorite part of being a lawyer. I love trial. The argument, the Jury, the game of it all… but… When I know the client is guilty… I can’t justify my actions to myself. And… it shakes me. Because I could not prosecute in Tiny Town. All I did there was make poor people poorer. Fines for everything when the population had nothing. But this? This is no better.
............
So, I shouldn’t say this but I know for a fact that my client is guilty of the crime for which he is accused. Maybe this time, it really isn’t his item… but that means he got caught one time out of the 50 he should have been caught. If the Jury hands back a Not Guilty… the only way that is possible is because of me… that the Jury liked me so much, that they rewarded my client. And that would make me sick.
..............
There is a God. It took two hours to deliberate; but a Guilty Verdict came through. Of course… the client wants to appeal. Mind you… the guilty plea actually costs him nothing. He’s been in jail for 3 months… the max sentence is 6 months. All this does is.... if/when he gets picked up for the exact same thing later… it is now enhanceable. Which.... maybe that will encourage him to stop breaking the law?
........

So… my day. Left the Apartment at 7. Got out of Court at 5. Left the client and left the far-City at 5:45. It takes an hour to drive back to the office. I get back to the office at 6:40. I work until 7:30. Back home at 8. LONG day, right? Between yesterday and today? I have picked up 14.4 billable hours. Necessary as I have a wedding in San Francisco and fly out on Thursday only to fly back in on Tuesday. This was a trip planned last year while I was a Prosecutor. One of the things I specifically told the Partners was that if they would not be okay with me taking this trip, I could not accept the job. They seemed fine with it at the time. Now? Chinese Boss is passive-aggressively telling me how “it is just a bad time” and how “she’s worried about my cases and my billables.” Never mind the fact that I’m averaging around 4 to 5 hours a week still… which is “average to above average” for the area. If she is/was/does have a problem… wish she would have said so when I interviewed. Because… seriously… this was a Required Family Obligation. Non-negotiable. It is what it is, I guess.
...........

In other news? When I got home at 8, Wife was at her computer. She assured me she wasn’t being lazy… she was making sure she had enough videos on her tablet for the planes. I asked if she was packed… “mostly.” I packed up as much as possible… Wife asked me several times why I hadn’t packed Khakis (because Wife says they need to be ironed)… I hadn’t packed most of my button up social shirts (because Wife says they have holes in them)… so… yeah. Wife… you had all of Monday off. You packed a bag, sequestered my clothes and… stopped. That was your whole day? I know I shouldn’t be aggravated by what she, in her way, considered helpful but… the exact clothes I would be needing for this trip, you sequester and just… leave? Like… you sequester them for repair or ironing… and then don’t do anything? Frustrating.

Frankly… just adds to the frustrating, I guess. She hasn’t asked me about my case, she hasn’t asked me about my day. She’s focused on her leg hair and her tablet… not even on packing or anything. Frustrating.
