Yesterday we saw the neurosurgeon who released the blood and pressure from Husband’s skull. A scan had been done two days before that. Youngest daughter and I looked at the disc containing the scan and she pointed out things she wanted to question. We could see the screws and the plate covering the holes made in surgery. At the doctor’s office we got to see the other scans (from before, during, and just after the operation).
Those early scans showed truly horrifying conditions. The blood was so great a quantity that all of his brain was crowded into the left rear of his skull. . The improvement since then is nothing short of miraculous. Some of the brain, of course, was killed by lack of oxygen, but much less than was first thought. He has already made a good quantity of recovery and will make more. Just how much is in question, but current conditions are favorable for function. His physical condition is better than it has been for some time - possibly a couple of years, during which he has lost more and more use of his left side. He walks and moves strikingly better than before. His cognitive functions are less returned, but still improving. His memory is up to about 45 percent function, from 25 percent.
Therapists come and go all the day – occupational, physical, speech and cognition . Youngest daughter (with us for a few more days) and I attempt to keep his conscious mind fully engaged with the exercises given him. There are all sorts of interesting puzzles to increase cognitive function. . I try to do the exercises with him, first to keep him engaged, and second, to give him someone to critique.
I’m more hopeful, but totally exhausted. My own physical function cannot be improved and this is most difficult.
To quote a real President,
“Let us move forward with great vigor.”
