the stars in poetry

The stars look down at us humans and think
“Animals that can talk, this is the most amazing thing ever.”
“They blink in and out of life so quickly, it’s like they twinkle.”
“They’re so small and far away, they must be gigantic up close.”
“They must be miraculous up close.”
“It’s a shame we can never touch them but we’re just stars.”
“Those are animals that can talk, that is so amazing.”
They watch our tiny motions beneath them and
imagine that our little patterns must somehow
predict their futures up there.
Even though they know that’s silly,
we’re just so strange and wonderful
they can’t help but believe that
we must mean something.
“Animals that talk, could you ever believe it.”
They mutter to each other up in the darkness
but despite their fascination with us
keep to their job of shining just the same.
Despite their wonderment up there,
they hold their commission.
