I deplore the question: Is the glass half empty or half full?

For major depression; I’ve seen a few psychologists in my life and two psychiatrists. Useless, the lot of them! Each one ALWAYS asked the above question.

It’s usually followed by an image like you see here, with the expectancy of 1 of 2 possible answers. It’s a complete crock and here’s why…

1. An intelligent person (some might say a smart ass) in truth are correct; that the glass is always full, no matter what, but let’s just say that the person asking the questions covers his or her tracks and asks more specifically… air aside; is the glass half full or half empty? To which I reply:

By the look of this particular image, the glass is slightly more empty than full as it’s wider at the top than the bottom, so if you honestly think about it… whomever uses this image vs a cylindrical glass is likely both a pessimist (in denial) and an idiot.

2. (And this is extremely important!!!) Speaking of idiots; (no offense if you work in the field, but…) any psychologist / psychiatrist that believes you’re an optimist if you answer the glass is half full, is 100% full of shit. The truth of the matter is… it all depends on the situation. If I have a glass, and you fill it half way with whatever, then my answer is “It is half full”, but, if I have a glass and it’s completely full, then I drink or pour out half of it, then my answer is “The glass is half empty.” Only a moron can determine which one it is without knowing how the glass got that way in the first place!

Now, going back to the smart ass (whom I agree with).

Saying that a part of the glass is empty is also saying that it is filled with nothing, yet air is something and it’s full of molecules! Nothing is never nothing! For nothing has to be something, or else it would be nothing, and nothing can’t be or you wouldn’t be able to talk about it. To talk about nothing means the subject of nothing becomes something, even if that something is nothing, thus proving that nothing is in fact something!

Proudly putting therapists in therapy or to the unemployment line since 1987.
