sometimes in poetry

Some times I think about how many romantic comedy endings couldn’t happen now
because of how airport rules have changed.
Some times I think about how many sitcom miscommunications and misunderstandings
couldn’t happen now because of cell phones.
Some times I think about how many montages of researching or studying hard
in libraries couldn’t happen now because we have the internet.
How we can’t have the cool STOP THE PRESSES scenes now
because news websites can update whenever.
How all the “getting directions from wacky local scenes” are dead now
because nearly everyone has a GPS.
How characters can’t meet by chance by bumming a smoke anymore
because sharing a vape with a stranger is straight up nasty.
Nobody has to ask for the time anymore in a moment of fighting the clock tension
because everyone has a clock display in their goddamned cell phone!
We had a whole language of tropes and conventions
as shortcuts in teevee and movies that
advances in technology ran a lap around
and now they would not make a lick of sense
to anyone under 25 or so without explaining it.
Of course
watching a teevee or
going to the movies are
getting around to being killed by technology too
like Superman looking for a phone booth to change in and
only finding cell phone charging stations and
WiFi hot spots.
