I want a God who’ll tell me I’m a good boy
“good boy!”
I want a God who’ll pet me on the head
give me a treat now and then
I want a God who’ll brag to Her friends
about how smart I am for a human
how I’ll try to understand the mysteries
of why everything is
the way a dog will bark at a teevee
the way a cat will bat at the laptop
I want a God who’ll hold me and tell me
its okay when I bark at the shadows
“its okay, good boy”
“you’re a very good boy”
“you’re stupid as shit but
you’re very smart for what you are,
good boy, good boy”
I want a God who can fix
nearly everything that’s wrong
and when She can’t
She can put me down gently
in a way that I’ll never understand
I want a God who’ll tell me I’m a good boy
“good boy, good boy”
“who’s a good boy?”
“are you a good boy”
I’m a good boy.
I want a God who’s actually there.
