this life electric in poetry

we were born with minds and bodies
prepared for jungles and for caves
not information highways and mass graves
at best adapted to be hunter-gatherers
shaman and women campfire blatherers
it takes a lot to ramp it up for
this life electric
for driving cars and dried-up riverbeds
for cable news and knowing we’ll be dead
for tapas bars and city streets
for public squares and secret needs
yes we built this but still
we were not built for it
this life eclectic
sometimes it feels like a joke
sometimes we feel broken
as if this is a life defective
but this life’s just changing
faster than we’re built to evolve
it don’t take a genius
don’t take a detective
it don’t take a bible
don’t take invective
we’re just trying to catch up
to this new life reflected
in flat-screen teevees
through a two-way mirror deflected
this life at light speed
as we struggle to fulfill basic needs
in this life electric
but it’s okay it’s okay
we’ll prob’ly get another day
