Sometimes I don’t understand where I came from. My father supports Trump and says Barack Obama was the worst president of all time. Whereas, I say Trump is a monster and Obama is “easily bottom half but not THE WORST.”
My dad, obviously, grew up white, male, wealthy and in the 50s. Hell, he spent this afternoon watching the movie “Savages” a film where Charlton Heston is The White Indian who saves the Sioux Tribe from their own deviousness. So… traditional western Whites Good Indians Bad… the kind of movie Dad grew up watching. So I get it. As a little kid, my Dad was raised with “whites are superior, wealth is always earned by hard work, and men are men women are women and they only fuck each other.”
But he literally said “Why should I care, I’ll be dead before anything too cataclysmic happens anyway.” LE SIGH!
Literally, the kind of thinking that got the world in this mess. “Make it someone else’s problem.” What is really funny? When Obama was president, Dad was very aware how “sins of the past” were catching up to my generation. Soon as Trump is in office, it is all like it didn’t happen. Which, I suppose, makes sense. Being raised white with money, he learned that “Republicans were the good guys and Democrats wanted to punish the successful.” Whereas I thoroughly believe each policy must be tested on its merit, fuck party. And my brother is a passionate Libertarian who just says fuck the government.
