I don’t know about y’all, but this, the, hopefully, above link, shows up in my feed at least twice a week. Ok, the Free (plus shipping and handling) rebel flag does. The above, hopefully, link is rebel, ‘merican and don’t tread on me (kinda pre winning independence but post declaring it flag). The fun part is the comments section. All I’ve added, and I’ve added just about everytime, is some version of “Free? Shipping and handling is like twenty bucks if you order three. Must be damn heavy or handled with gold tongs.” I think I’m a little funny, but the method to my madness was get some bickering going. I’m basically ignored.
The curious thing about the comments is that somehow this all links to Trump, mostly by implication (they didn’t show up in my feed, either, until after the election) and, in varying degrees of articulation, that the rebel flag is symbolic of something positive. There’s also a lot of arguments over the historical aspect and folks are treating honest Abe like he was Hilary Clinton and they were trumpers.
I can’t imagine a universe where Trump would be anything but the yankeeiset yank yankee on earth, or the northernest war making aggressor in the war of yankee aggression. Granted, I don’t know much about him, haven’t looked up nor am I interested in his bio, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he’d even visited below Atlantic City. Not saying he wouldn’t enjoy owning a plantation full of slaves, just saying he’d rather run a military industrial war machine than grow cotton. Cotton doesn’t grow well in Manhatten anyhow.
The symbolism … Um, as far as I know, here in the future, a good 150 years after the war, the rebel flag is symbolic of ignorant rednecks or the Dukes of Hazard (ignorantier redder necks). I appear to be mistaken. Again with varying degrees of articulate and cohesive rhetoric, it symbolizes the pride of an oppressed people unjustly punished for their righteous stand by Hilary Clinton. Huh. That war went on for four years? Almost five? Seems like the Irish Flag, the Polish Flag or the Israeli flag would make that statement in a more definitive manner. For one thing all three of those countries actually prevailed over the course of many conflicts. Yes, Israel is less than a hundred years old, but the oppression and punishment dates back at least four thousand years. Poland had to contend with Tzar, communist Russia, Nazi Germany and communist Russia again. Ireland fought with the British up until, well, tomorrow. That is complicated, parts of Ireland became a free state or a republic last century sometime between world wars, but it was fluid, without looking it up I’m not entirely sure all of Ireland belongs to Ireland.
Since the free shipping and handling people seem to think mixing symbols on a flag is cool, they could do half Irish, half Polish and a star of David in the center like the snake in the center of the , hopefully, above linked clusterfuck.
Incidentally I just got back from Louisiana. Yes, again. It doesn’t get much deeper south than that. Well, geographically it does, psychologically it doesn’t. Like Michigan Louisiana had flown a French flag for at least it’s first hundred years (prior to the eighteenth century) and, at one time, I think, an English flag and, again, I think, a Spanish one. At bare minimum that’s 96 years longer than the rebel flag. Neither Michigan or Lousiana were one of the original thirteen colonies. Both were part of the Louisiana purchase. Both states have towns named predominantly after French or native Americans. In Louisiana, on this short but intensive trip, I didn’t see a single rebel flag. I’ve seen a few here, usually next to the gun rack and Budweiser decal on the rear window of a pick up truck. When you roll your truck are you technically letting the flag touch the ground? That’s so disrespectful to the King (Budweiser, it’s the king of beers or have they quit using that slogan?).
Somehow some of the comments drag anti-Semitism in, I mean in a symbolic way. Lincoln and Hilary are Jews, you know, that kind of thing. All WTF-ing aside, wouldn’t that make a Nazi flag symbolicier? I don’t know. If you’re bored go to, hopefully, the above link. You can get a free flag. Apparently if you type in all caps your free flag can stand for whatever the fuck you want it too.
