I’ve seen a fair number of movies this year, a handful of them were even good. That song up there wasn’t in any of them. Funny how that happens. That one year every movie had Jeff Buckley’s version of Leonard Cohens Hallelujah, and that other year every other movie had that one bluesy cover of over the rainbow. Nick drake had been dead twenty years then all of the sudden VW puts pink moon in a car ad and everyone is like “Wow n shit” and shit, wow.

Some of the movies I’ve seen this year that weren’t very good had an expression in them that bugs me, it comes around every few years; Go big or go home. Two things bug me about that, 1) It’s always trotted out like it’s brand new and 2) The expression is Go high or go home. Or, at least, that’s how I heard it and used it ever since I was a kid. It’s a card game taunt, best used in Spades but it’d work in pinochle too, even hearts if you were shooting for irony.

The idea is you say Go high or go home like you know dude is sitting on high trump and you’re suggesting your partner can beat his second highest. I guess it’s too specific for the movies and it comes across as being some sort of slogan for bravery. It’s a taunt. If card game shit talking were broadly understood, the next four years of Trump would be funny. Comics had a ball with Baby Bush, which was almost worth the invasion of two sovereign nations with no exit strategy and the patriot act which was sub titled fuck your right to privacy. Big laughs.

I popped out of my hidey hole to read some of you guys and gals stuff. You are all very good. I think folks whose day job is writer should make it their night job, it’d add that spark of humility and reality that makes places like this one sparkle so much. Granted, eye of the beholder and shit, but today this eye is tearing up a bit. I love you all as though you were my own online friends n shit.
