the truth of you and I in poetry

in the timeline where it all worked out
we were lovers
on the world where it didn’t all go wrong
we drank miracles together as if just water
in some velvet dimension that
was not so second-hand
where it all fell out as planned
we took a trip down to D.C.
we hoisted up our children on our shoulders
for the inauguration of the Secretary
everyone smiled and waved
there was hope and love
and it was perfect
we were perfect
everything was as it was supposed to be

but here we are now
anyhow
and I just want you to know that
somewhere
it turned out right
and it was amazing
and we were amazing
you’re still amazing
but we were amazing together
and it worked

the fault isn’t in the stars
nor is the fault in us
the fault’s in how the coins fell
in a coincidence that didn’t happen
in one missed encounter
in a simple missed bus
that’s all
you are still amazing
