deep and impenetrable silence in Day to Day

The internet Nazis at my office have tied down web access to such an extent that I am leaving earlier because I can’t stand the tedium any longer. I can’t decide whether I am doing less work. I am certainly in the office for less time, but I can’t decide if the time I would have spent here if I had internet access would be productive. I think it’s worth noting that my life at this desk (yes I am in the office right now typing this) was slightly more bearable with Jazz24.org, which I could listen to while working.

What intrigues me is the seemingly random way web access is now restricted. You Tube is blocked on my laptop at my desk, but I can still access it from my tablet which is connected to the office wifi; same with Facebook and Twitter. Jazz24 is blocked completely; so is the the John Lewis website, and ebay. But Amazon and Argos are apparently totally unblocked.

Argos and Amazon are allowed, but Jazz24 and John Lewis are blocked. Is this some weird anti-capitalist move to crush the bourgeoisie element? I wonder if I can get Radio 3 or Classic FM…

A-Ha! Clearly a move to rid the office of middle-class, public school boys.

Since my company was bought earlier this year, a few odd things have happened. The HR department is now called, wait for it, “The People Office”. No, seriously. I wonder if they paid a consulting firm to come up with that wacky and innovative moniker. The IT department has been rationalised. And by that I mean they now seem to exist only as an ethereal entity on the sub continent and appear to be incapable/unwilling to support anything. I can still raise support tickets, but the only effect seems to be a sort of stirring that may or may not result in a telephone call from someone with a peculiar accent followed by deep and impenetrable silence.

I can’t make myself care. Maybe they will make me redundant. That could be lucrative. I have been here more than 10 years now.

I bought a new tv from Rob at work. I’m not really an authority on tv technology. Our previous tv was very old indeed and had no whizzy functions at all. The new one connects to the internet and plays games. I’ve ordered a game pad for it so that the boy doesn’t wreck the remote control. Lucky I still have Amazon access.

I have booked a day off on 21st Oct. It’s going to be a father and son day. I wonder what we should do.
