please hold in poetry

whenever they say “please hold”
during the course of telephony
I like to pretend they mean
that they’re very lonely
as if they’re saying
as if they’re begging “please hold me”

it’s too early for that just yet
I mean we haven’t even met
buy me a drink first
take me out to a movie
Even goddamn appetizers
at some goddamn Applebees
something, I mean

not that I don’t want to cuddle too
in the grasp of anxiety attack throes
being informed how much I still owe
for college to some finance bros
but I’d like to look you in the eyes
before I am told
please hold me
please hold
