Some 2500 years ago democracy was conceived and implemented in Greece. Some 250 years ago Jeffersonian Democratic principles were conceived in an English colony and implemented a bloody decade later, mostly. A few years ago the world let Greece go bankrupt. This year Americans show contempt for democracy. Somehow Americans have come to believe democracy and contempt are synonymous.
I could, and might still, wax poetic and didactic, draw fanciful filigrees of rhetoric in the air. Let me make one simple point first; A democracy is a rule by majority. You may argue the imperfections, the corruption, the flaws, but in a simple nutshell; a democracy is rule by majority. You may think the majority are idiots (Christ knows they think you are) gullible, easily manipulated. I may even agree with you, doesn’t change the meaning of the word though.
In this light, bitching about the process, polarizing, ad hominem attacks on fellow citizens is blatant contempt for the theory. Perhaps that is the intent, perhaps we don’t really care that much for democracy, the world, however, has no use for armchair revolutionaries. Change your government or change the channel.
You know what scares me more than pundits, power brokers, capitalist interests controlling our nation’s leadership? Social media. Social media loves vitriol about rights, rights to free speech, rights to bear arms, rights to vote and ephemeral things like the right to happiness. It hates responsibility. I mean personal responsibility. We love our dead soldiers, firemen, police who defended whatever right we are stumping about, but the loudest and stumpiest, were not shoulder to shoulder. It’s noble for someone else to die for your right to do whatever you think is your right without taking any responsibility for using those rights wisely. It’s contempt, pure and simple.
We elect every position from town council to president. We the people. If your guy or gal didn’t win it’s because he wasn’t “our” guy or gal. Nobody fights to defend you, the fight to defend us. Nobody gives a shit about your will, it’s our will. So when you denigrate your neighbor, that back-sliding liberal pussy, that conservative fat cat son of a bitch, you denigrate us. When you question the right of anyone else to vote, that god damned commie, that cum guzzling sodomite, you question our rights. When you burn crosses, books, churches, you burn our heart and soul. That’s what a democracy is.
I’ve lived through some bad political times for this country, assassinations and assassination attempts, impeachments, resignations, a teeter totter economy, wars and rumors of war, maleficence, fiduciary misappropriation, weak leadership, strong leadership with poor counsel, and I’m still willing to be us. This year is the ugliest cock fight I’ve ever witnessed. The candidates are problematic, but the supporters are contemptuous. Social media is rife with hate speeches and wild accusations. It’s we the people. That’s who the hate speeches actually target, target our intelligence, our security, our very core and the heart of what democracy means. It’s not complicated, there’s a search tab near the tab for your social media, you can pause in a rant to type; Democracy definition. And, you know, maybe we’re done with that shit, maybe we’ve run out of reasons to respect one another, respect the process, maybe the process has gone sour, passed its expiration date. If you believe that to be true, we need solutions not hate speeches. Quit posting ugly tabloid style photos of the candidates and their latest misdeeds and post your idyllic idea of how we live with one another.
Come November there will be a new president elect and some chairs in the house and senate will have new asses in them too. It won’t be anyone’s job to defend you or your rights, their job will be defend us and our rights. And we will do it all over again as long as we are a democracy. Quit trying to shame or bully people over to your views. Your choice isn’t between two candidates, it’s between respecting your neighbor or disrespecting and the returns are immediate. Every four years we get the national opportunity to either show our ass or show our pride. The outlook this year is … Cheeky.
