Coping With the Unexpected in Everyday Ramblings

This was my beloved former gym and track across the big street on the 25th of September last year.

This is it today. I tried to get the same shot but there is a fence all around the areas being worked on. It was also drizzling a bit as well.

I had to wait to go out and take the shot because the young men who were here last week working on my tub were back today (at least two of them were) to replace my kitchen faucet. They did tighten it up but it still leaked a little in a different place when you pushed it way back and they did tell me that might happen and if it did to ask for a new faucet.

Yesterday when the incredibly, amazingly, re-assuredly professional dryer guys were here installing my new dryer I had a chat with my manager who accompanied them because of the fiasco last week.

It turns out that the young men’s father, with whom they had a contract (he’s the guy who installed my new toilet about four months ago, very friendly and cheerful) just died. So these young men are on their own trying to take over the business they were just starting to learn a few months ago.

She told me that they had also disregarded given timeframes elsewhere and she was going to give them one last chance. She didn’t even know who the third guy was, a friend maybe?

They came within 10 minutes of the early time frame allotted today so that was good but it took them two and a half hours to get it in! It was not a relaxed morning for me and the cats were vibing off all of us and in need of much reassurance. I’ve never seen that before. At one point I went into the kitchen and one of them was reading out of a manual to the other.

I checked before they left and everything works. So this is all good news.

With any luck I won’t need anything plumbing related for oh…years. My toilet, stove, washer and dryer and now kitchen faucet have all been replaced since I moved in here 7 years ago.

I could use a new carpet and blinds but I’ve had enough disruption for now.

It turns out my friend, former IT guy and yoga student that had the back surgery has a dropped foot. He called this week and we had a chat about what happened. It was just one night at dinner he realized his foot wasn’t working right and then the next day it got worse and after the his partner insisted he go to the doctor and after reviewing his MRI they got him into surgery that night to try to minimize the nerve damage.

He is (mostly) walking with a cane and back at work and he does not know if his foot will ever work normally again… or if he can drive a manual transmission again. It takes a really long time for nerves to heal.

My heart aches for him. His PT says he can’t come back to yoga for months but we all miss him. And I think he misses us.

My friend Mrs. Sherlock had a good time in Holland on her bike/barge trip and I will hear more about that in the morning when we get to walk Frida the poodle. I’ve missed them both.

I saw another one of my students who skipped the summer classes walking with crutches on Wednesday…

You just never know… you really don’t.

I hope the kids get their act together. It's so hard for them to get a good start in life. Working in people's homes has got to be hard too. My brother worked for a local plumber for a while and he said the friendly people who wanted to hear about his travels - he was just back from India, Iran and Afghanistan circa 1975 - were hard to deal with because he had to charge them for the time he talked to them. And the people with really nice houses were really fussy. He went back to working on cars and trucks and general maintenance work.

What is the new building? I know you told us about it before it was built but I forget. Does it affect access to the track?

It is for offices for the sportswear company Under Armor. And yes it will no only affect access to the track but they are moving "my" bus stop a long block away.
