Migraines, Music and Birds on the Page in Everyday Ramblings

I remember my first migraine quite well. I was 17. I had no idea it was possible to experience such a complex sense experience that was so uncomfortable and affected so much more than my head. My voice, my vision, my gut…

Since then I have learned to live with them, an unwelcome but regular guest. I have medication I can take but over the last few years or so it takes longer to kick in and I am getting more nausea.

The other night I woke up in the middle of the night and knew one was coming on and when I went to get the drug I was out. I thought, no problem, I have an emergency stash in with my travel toiletries.

There was none there either.

This is the first time in something like 30 years I have run out of drugs without a backup stash and it is a symptom of just how tired and overburdened I have been with the overtime at work and teaching and the cats, all the dental surgery and doing more social things…

I sat down at my computer at 3 AM right then and there and ordered a refill. I use a mail order pharmacy connected with the institution for which I work (it is quite reasonably priced) and for some reason it took them days to fill the prescription. I should get them tomorrow. They deliver by courier.

But this morning (on my first day off of work of four) I woke up with an even worse migraine. We have serial weather fronts moving through. I did everything I have learned over the years to do about the symptoms and I was able to get out for a walk and to the grocery and do laundry and play with the cats but I was not enjoying myself.

Early this afternoon Kes suggested I take codeine. I did.

In a weird way, even though it hasn’t been fun, it was probably really good for me. It kept me close to home and quiet. I listened to classical music and puttered.

Kes and Most Honorable are coming to visit tomorrow and we are going to our favorite casual Mexican restaurant. The cats are so excited. They adore Kes and Most Honorable and we are all getting ready to move in our fall schedules so I won’t see them that often.

I received this gorgeous coloring book today that has been on back order of 40 of “America’s Favorite Birds”. It was a promo from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. I am not sure what medium to use to do the coloring. I will have fun figuring it out listening to more classical music.

Crossword puzzles and coloring and puttering and reading and eating yummy things… those are my ambitions for the next three days…

Today we had the first real rain in well over a month. We need it so I didn’t mind so much. I was glad not to be stuck out in it this afternoon.

There will be plenty of time for getting wet in the months ahead.
