You’re in for a doozy when I publish my “regular entry” today. I suppose the day hasn’t been too terribly different from any other day but… that isn’t exactly a ringing endorsement. PREVIEW OF UPCOMING ENTRY: I tried to cook Saturday, I was sick Sunday, and today marks so many OWI cases (most of which we’re certain to lose or give sweetheart deals to) that my “secretary” specifically said that it would be better if we were the center of an atomic explosion.
So… with all of that… and so sick of myself and this wretched place that I can hardly see straight… I wanted to try to do a more positive
What would you do with your life if money didn’t matter?
My analytical lawyer brain is making a big deal about the wording. Because it isn’t suggesting that the respondent has “lots of money” or that the respondent has enough money that they don’t have to worry about money. The question asks if money didn’t matter… thus… a global shift in consciousness wherein money was not a significant factor. That may be a distinction without a difference to some; but I see it as more… egalitarian. “…if money didn’t matter” suggests that the respondent need not be constrained by morality or necessity. Namely… I don’t have to worry about giving to charity or buying a big house because… if money doesn’t matter… then I assume a more Star Trek like existence where resources are limitless and freely distributed.
So from that perspective… if money truly didn’t matter… what would I do with my life?
First of all, I’d travel a hell of a lot more. Ireland, United Kingdom, and Japan are on my bucket list. And I don’t like thinking that I may die before visiting places I so dearly want to visit. I would CERTAINLY spend more time with friends and family. I can’t even put into words how my current situation makes me… just… PAIN for time with friends! But ultimately? I’d still have a shop. If money wasn’t a thing anymore… I’d still want to set up a place where people can discuss and enjoy hobbies and activities.
And therein lies a key element of reality… I need to be around people, have discussions, I need to “report” to somewhere and feel like I make a difference or do something of value. What “business” would I run if money no longer existed?
I’d open up a a giant store, one that covered an entire city block. At the center, there would be a bar/cafe/kitchen… a place that served the entire building food and drink. But the building would be rather split in half other than that Shared Service Area. On one side, a performance space for concerts, dances, community events. On the other side, a comic book store with spaces for Tabletop Games and Tournaments. So… really, one building that was able to meet a multitude of needs. It could be THE place to go during the day for a nice cafe lunch/cup of coffee… it could be where the next generation of authors discover their love for comic books… it could be where a shy kid discovers his calling as a DM… it could be where someone sees their favorite band live for the first time… it could be where the High School hosts dances… it could be so many things. That is what I’d do.
