Thanks to the black cat fixing the radio and my recent interest in Twitter, I spent more time at the Democratic convention than I had in a long time.
Since I am a Democrat (I have credentials)
List of my Democratic credentials:
-
First memory of going to vote in Rossville with my parents and uncle Kenneth in 1952. I was supporting Truman who unfortunately was not running. After voting at the school house, my uncle went down the very high with a hump in it slide with me.
-
Kennedy was a big deal with Irish Catholics. We started getting Time magazine when he was elected.
-
I campaigned (a little) with Irene Ryan Jones in 1964. That was the year Hillary was a Goldwater Girl. I like the connection = same time, same thing, even if it is pretty vague.
-
The 60s and 70s had a lot of great Democrats. Harold Hughes and John Culver from Iowa. Humphrey and Mondale from Minnesota.
-
I was in Toastmistress - female version of Toastmasters which was all male at the time. Kristy Dienst was a teacher member. She had kept her maiden name partly because she was proud of her German ancestry. She said her grandmother who had come from Germany and who remembered the very tough times in the 1920s and 30s had told her to always vote for Democrats ‘because they would put the jam jar on a lower shelf’. That is my sole favorite political quote.
-
After my husband died in 2002, I decided one of the things I could do with my extra time was become active in the local Dem organization. I had a wonderful time. Every single thing I did for and with the Dems was interesting and rewarding. I met great people, heard great speeches, ate great food, and just plain enjoyed myself. I also thought I was doing good for the world. I still think that.
-
I’m less active now. I think I may have just done enough. The local organization has new blood and it’s doing well. I still turn up once in a while.
Ok back to the convention.
HIghlights, anyone?
-
Just saw pics of the balloons. Weren’t they great balloons?
-
By the way - I think Hillary is a warm intelligent woman and a sincere speaker. She says things. There is also a rumor that she listens to people.
-
I admire her marriage to Bill Clinton. I think there is love there. There have been some really hard times and they have stayed together. I value that.
-
I loved the diversity of the speakers. The Muslim couple whose son had been killed. Meryl Streep in her flag dress. The black woman who had lost sons. The Marine Corps general. The actress from the Wives of… show who was from Texas and whose ancestors had lives in Texas when it was Mexico. Kareem Abdul Jabar. Both Obamas. Cary Booker’s great speech. Tim Kaine who imitated Trump = Bulieve me. Joe Biden who is an old time Democrat of the type I love. Bloomberg for fuck’s sake!
-
The whole thing makes me feel good. I hope Hillary will win the election. I do not understand why so many people do not like her. I identify with her in a lot of ways. Am I unlikable for the same reasons?
On my last entry, I started with a link to a bunch of words and pictures. I didn’t identify it because I thought it might be too political. Did anyone follow it anyway? If you are curious go back and see if it’s still there.
Leave me a note, a private one if you wish, and tell me what it is about her that you don’t like. Thanks, much.
I tweeted my state rep Patti Ruff =
I like classy down to earth hard working women.
This seems to be the entry that won’t quit. There. I think it’s done now.
